With growing concern over bacteria’s which are continually showing resistance to Antibiotics many germs seem not to be effected to what used to be our former saviour’s such as Penicillin, and Methicillin which have been used for years to treat many forms of infection. Vancomycin, was long considered the best weapon against even the toughest bacteria though for whatever reasons more and more strains of bacteria seem to be building a strong resistance even to this.
Dr Molan proved that there was a defined difference between Manuka honey and standard honeys the composition was very similar as it still contained high levels of hydrogen peroxide though there was another factor which helped to stabilise the hydrogen peroxide when in contact with other enzymes and aid its remarkable anti microbial properties. Though there was still an additional factor which work synergistically with the honey something Dr Molan proceeded to test and label as UMF the Unique Manuka Factor Manuka honey is today being used in hospitals throughout the world as research continues. Manuka Honey is being used for a remarkable range of ailments and infections both external and internal from acid reflux and gastric problems to acne and debilitating skin conditions. At times it is used as the last resort though as the proof continues to unfold it won’t be long this is the recommended treatment. The cause of this problem may be a result of many factors though over the last 30 years antibiotics have been grossly over prescribed by medical professionals. With most cold and flu symptoms it’s generally best for us to eat healthily by feeding our bodies with well needed vitamins and minerals and allow our body to get some rest to let our immune system do its work naturally. When web are prescribed un-needed antibiotic it’s gives our bodies an chance to build a resistance against the chemicals used and also allows the bacteria which do survive and there are always a few, to reproduce and pass on their resist genes.

With this a lot of people are regressing back to traditional methods of medicine and what started off being used as last resort option is now progressing and making its return to the main stage. Honey has long been known and used for medicinal purposes it was even carried throughout the wars for the treatment of wounds. Its medicinal properties are related to its high content of Hydrogen Peroxide which is a well known antiseptic it’s also full of vitamins and minerals and as it’s natural these are excepted by the body’s immune system. Much of the honeys anit microbial activity is bacteriostatic meaning it stops the bacteria from reproducing and spreading. Resistance by bacteria is more likely to happen when the bacteria is attacked by an agent to kill.
Throughout the last couple of decades people have been researching closer into the use honey as a viable alternative to antibiotics. One person in was Professor Dr Peter Molan from the Waikato University of New Zealand. Though he was interested in a honey which had long been renowned for it healing properties. Manuka honey has been known to New Zealand locals for its medicinal purposes and it’s use against infections such as cold and flu. This honey produced by bees which feed exclusively on the Manuka Bush widely known as the therapeutic tee tree. Dr Peter Molan was the professor to establish a 20 year relationship with this honey as he researched it’s medicinal purposed to prove this honey was different and release his facts to the world.
This bioactive, medical-grade honey has been proven to destroy infectious bacteria that are responsible for many different types of health complications the composition of the honey helps to draw the bacteria out of the wound and cleanse it from further infection. To date no bacteria has shown a resistance to Manuka honey even treating dreaded conditions such as MRSA.
As always, great post.
